W.J. O’Neil Company Helps Volkswagen Go Green

Mechanical Contractor installs systems that save energy and harvest rainwater

Chattanooga, TN, — John O’Neil Sr., President of W.J. O’Neil Company announced that his mechanical contracting firm is installing two new systems at the Volkswagen Chattanooga plant that will help the plant be more sustainable and reduce its impact on the environment.

“Volkswagen and W.J. O’Neil have many common values,” O’Neil said. “Both are serious about environmental sustainability and 21st Century manufacturing.”

The first system is a two-pipe zoning system that simultaneously cools one zone while heating another. The key is the system’s inverter technology. It varies the capacity of the system to meet the indoor space load requirements while saving energy and providing the ultimate in indoor comfort. It varies the speed of the compressor to deliver the exact amount of heating or cooling demanded by each zone.

“This system is the first two-pipe, simultaneous cooling and heating system available in the United States and around the world,” said O’Neil.

W.J. O’Neil is also installing components of a commercial rainwater harvesting systems at the new plant. Rainwater harvesting presents an opportunity for augmentation of water supplies allowing for self-reliance and sustainability.

W.J. O’Neil is installing a below grade storage tank with built-in pumps, and all the piping needed to disperse the rainwater to toilets, for irrigation, laundries and other non-potable uses. ,/

“Rainwater harvesting is one of the most promising alternatives for supplying water,” said O’Neil. “Volkswagen is a very forward-thinking company.”

With an office and fabricating facility in Livonia, W.J. O’Neil recently opened an office and a 25,000-square-foot fabricating facility in Chattanooga. The state-of-the-art facility allows the company to fabricate in-house so costs, schedule and engineering are controlled, and safety and quality are maximized.
